After sharing bronze at last summer’s World Championships in Beijing, sprint-specialists Trayvon Bromell and Andre De Grasse are to go head-to-head once again in the men’s 200m at the Birmingham Diamond League.
Aged 20 and 21 respectively, Bromell (USA) and De Grasse (CAN) have established themselves as two of the world’s best sprinting talents, with both men hoping for encouraging performances at this year’s Birmingham Diamond League meet in the build up to the Rio Olympics.
Joining the pair in the West Midlands will be the current 200m Diamond Race leader Alonso Edward. The Panamanian will be looking for a third successive top-three finish having started the series in impressive form, with a second-place finish in Doha’s Diamond League opener followed by victory in Rabat.
Doha’s 200m victor will also be appearing in Birmingham, with the USA’s Ameer Webb hoping to bolster his claim for a spot on Team USA for the upcoming Olympics. Both Webb and De Grasse train under Stuart McMillan at ATLIS so are sure to know plenty about one another, with Webb surprising many with victory over De Grasse in May’s Mt. SAC Relay event in California.
Leading the British charge are James Ellington - recent winner at the Ostrava Golden Spike - and sub-10 second 100m man Chijindu Ujah. Ellington won the British 200m title back in 2013, whilst Ujah will be looking to improve upon his 20.48 clocking from earlier this year.
Completing the field will be sub-20 second men Isiah Young (USA) and Churandy Martina (NED).
