Newly crowned European champion Matt Hudson-Smith heads up stacked men's 400m field in Birmingham

The newly crowned European champion in the 400m, British star Matt Hudson-Smith is the next world-class athlete to have confirmed his attendance in Birmingham at next Saturday's Muller Grand Prix.

The latest Briton confirmed for the Diamond League meeting on the back of success at the on-going European Championships in Berlin, Hudson-Smith will join fellow British medal winners Dina Asher-Smith, Zharnel Hughes, Reece Prescod and Holly Bradshaw in Birmingham.

400m talent and the quest for the British 400m record

Long-thought of as the athlete who would claim the British national record over 400m which currently stands at 44.36 and is held by Iwan Thomas, Hudson-Smith gave the time a scare in his semi-final at the European Championships before easing right down to clock 44.76.

Then, last night, the 2016 Olympic finalist delivered when it mattered most to bag his first individual title on the senior international stage, with a time of 44.78 securing gold before his attention turns to Birmingham and racing against a world-class field next weekend.

Among those joining Hudson-Smith in the event are Commonwealth champion Isaac Makwala (BOT), USA pair Fred Kerley and Christian Taylor, the latter a world-class triple jumper who continues to impress in the one-lap sprint, and Asian record holder Abdelalah Haroun (QAT).

Haroun himself ran a scorching 44.07 personal best in London, and with the personal best times that he, Makwala (43.72) and Fred Kerley (43.70), it is plausible that the British record could well fall on home soil in Birmingham.

Speaking on the time British record himself, Hudson-Smith oozed confidence ahead of future races, saying:

"The record is going to come - it's just a matter of time. It's not an 'if' it's when - everyone knows I can do it."
