Muir impresses in Stanford

  • Laura Muir finished second in the 1500m in Stanford

The Scot put in another impressive performance in the States

Laura Muir built on her fine start to the season by finishing in second in the 1500m at the Prefontaine Classic in Stanford, just 43 hundreths of a second behind race-winner Faith Kipyegon.

Muir, who won in Stockholm earlier this month and recorded her second-fastest time ever over the distance in Rome, clocked a solid 3:59.47 to finish second at the USA meet - the seventh leg of the IAAF Diamond League.

Olympic and world 1500m champion Kipyegon made a dream return from her maternity leave by winning the race, storming ahead to hold of final lap assaults from Great Britain’s Muir and USA’s Shelby Houlihan.

Meanwhile, it was also a night to remember for 2018 Müller Grand Prix Birmingham finalist Zharnel Hughes, the Brit putting in another impressive sub-ten second showing in the 100m to finish in third place in 9.97.

Hughes, the joint-fastest British man over 100m this year, had already gone sub-10 once in Jamaica and showed his consistency again in Stanford, but it was world silver medallist Christian Coleman took the win in a world-leading time of 9.80.

Meanwhile, in the women’s 200m, European 100m and 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith was not able to maintain her winning streak having won the previous two Diamond League events as she crossed the line in third in 22.42 in a race won by Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare in 22.05.

Before the meet in Stanford, world leader over 100m Elaine Thompson was the only woman to beat Asher-Smith this year, doing so over 100m in the Rome Diamond League earlier this month as Asher-Smith went sub-11 seconds for the sixth time.

Elsewhere, Great Britain’s Laura Weightman finished fifth in the 3000m in 8:26.07, Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands clinching the victory in 8:18.49.
